Heel slipping is not always a size problem

A shoe can be the right length but still fail to hold the heel because of heel-cup shape, collar height, or poor lockdown.

Back to comfort tips

Support and stability

Heel slip can mean the shoe is too big, but it can also mean the heel shape, collar, or lacing system does not match your foot. Treating every heel-slip problem as a size problem can create new pressure in the forefoot.

Two different problems

If the whole foot slides forward, the shoe may be too long, too roomy, or not locked down well enough. If the forefoot feels reasonably secure but the heel lifts, the issue is more likely heel shape or lockdown.

Try these checks

  • Walk normally, then walk briskly and notice whether the heel lifts vertically.
  • Check whether your toes are gripping to keep the shoe on.
  • Use normal lacing first, then compare a heel-lock lace only as a test.
  • Make sure fixing the heel does not create forefoot pressure.

What to compare

  • Heel-cup shape and firmness.
  • Collar height and padding.
  • Lacing range over the instep.
  • Platform stability under the heel.
Bottom line

If only the heel is moving, do not immediately size down. Compare heel shape and lockdown first.
